Outstanding Monitors5
I'm a producer/director/editor at a network television production company. We've used these M-Audio BX5a monitors in most of our edit bays for several years now and have been very pleased with their performance. They produce crisp, clear sound for voice, music and effects. They're solid, look nice and feature cool blue pilot lights on front between the woofer and tweeter.

Highly recommended for post-production audio.

Good sounding monitors!5
I think these speakers sound great. They have enough power (70 watts/monitor bi-amped) that they're punchy and tight. I haven't directly compared them to other monitors but I have enough listening experience that I think they'll compare favorably to any monitors in the same price range. For a smaller-size monitor these have quite a big, even sound.

Clean5
What ever audio you put in is what you get out. Nothing gets in the way with these speakers. Clean flat sound, I hear every low and high from these. They kick pretty well for their size.

tSc - MS21.2 - Multimedia Speaker System
From The Speaker Company

Fantastic Sound at a Fantastic Price5
Bought these speakers to replace a pair of Boston Acoustics pc speakers that I have had for 10 years and used with two different computers. Figured I should finally update my speakers with my latest computer upgrade. Nowadays I use my computer as my cd/mp3/radio/all music player so I want some good sound without having to break the bank. This is my first time with a subwoofer. All I can say is WOW! The sound is fantastic, better than the BA's I had and I would imagine heads and tails above other computer speakers at this price point. Now I really dont need a radio. The setup was simple, the sound is rich and clear. Im no audiophile but I love music and these speakers are great. This is a newer company and I hope they stay around because they make a quality product and I will look to them first for my future audio needs

How can they make this for $36.00?5
I read a review in the local newspaper about the Speaker Company speakers for $36.00. I have now received the speakers and my opinion is how can the company box and ship the speakers from China for $36.00. The speakers in the box are almost free and they sound fantastic. Whatever you expect for a $36.00 speaker, you will be getting much more. This is an astonishing value! I am purchasing two more for my old CRT televisions.

Great Value5
I paid $20 for these delivered (Amazon Prime, when Amazon themselves had them in-stock). They're fantastic value - not HiFi, but pretty good for computer use. The bass is a little loose, but I didn't even expect a (powered) sub at this price.

They're shipped in good packaging, so should arrive in good condition. The satelite control is good (assuming you can live with another blue LED ..), and unexpected at this price.

Inexpensive Speaker Throwdown4
I had the opportunity to evaluate both these speakers and the Altec Lansing Three-Piece Speaker System for Computer and MP3 Players with Convenient Space Saving Design (Black) This set differs from the 3-speaker set in that it has angular satellite speakers and no separate subwoofer. Both speakers are within $5 in price of each other (at this writing). I tested both sets with my laptop, tv, and iPod.

I found these speakers to have fairly decent sound and very clear tone separation at lower volume levels which would be good in a workplace setting. The sound will distort if you crank up the volume too much, though. It has a combination on/off volume control and a separate tone control on the front of one of the units.

The other set I evaluated, Altec Lansing Three-Piece Speaker System for Computer and MP3 Players with Convenient Space Saving Design (Black)has worse sound quality, in spite of having a separate subwoofer. It also features a rather inconveniently placed on/off switch (the volume control is a better placed on the top of one of the units) on the back of one of the speaker satellites.

Here's a list of the features of both speaker sets and which set I preferred for each category (I refer to them as "3-speaker" and "2-speaker"):

| Price: Both speakers are within $5 of each other at this writing = DRAW
| Controls: 2-speaker set
| Styling: I prefer the 2-speaker set, but I realize that this is very subjective and others may like the 3-speaker set. If you're looking for compactness, consider that fact that the subwoofer in the 3-speaker is pretty ineffective and thus takes up unnecessary space.

I preferred the 2-speaker set, but I encourage you to check out the 3-speaker set that I evaluated and see what others have written about them and make the choice for yourself.

The best small speakers I've ever used5
Wow, what an experience! When they said "Crystal Clear", they really mean it - the sound definition is remarkable considering there's no sub-woofer. I previously had a pair of $10 basic speakers that were frankly terrible and made crackly sounds in the background all the time. I'm pleased to report than even with the computer and speaker volume turned up to maximum, there is no interference or distortion.

I tested these with several pieces of film music (Emiliana Torrini's "Gollum's Song", John Murphy's "In the House In a Heartbeat" and Batman Begins), which all have subtle musical details you normally only pick up on a reasonable home theater system, and I was greatly impressed with the quality. I also used Skype, and it was so good that the other person could have been in the room with me.

The footprint is slightly larger than I'd hoped for, and that was my first impression out of the box. I have a narrow desk for my computer (and a 22" monitor which takes up most of the space), but I was happy to make room once I'd heard the sound. The controls are located conveniently at the front of the right speaker and Altec Lansing are gracious enough to provide a power cord that's more than 3 feet long (many of my electronics seem to presume I have sockets available within six inches of the appliance). Overall, the set-up took under a minute from unpacking the box to hearing sound.

I received this on the Vine program so I didn't know what they cost; I was amazed to see the retail price is only $27 on Amazon. If you're planning on buying a new computer, I would strongly suggest getting these instead of the ones bundled with manufacturers. And if you want to vastly improve the sound on your existing computer, look no further. I didn't really expect much from these speakers and I have to say that I'm surprised to the point of planning to show them off to visitors.

Clear and Open sound, but modest bass3
These are decent speakers, but not great. If you just wanted a speaker upgrade for your PC or Mac, this might fill the bill, but don't expect super hi-fi sound.

Pros:
1. Easy set up.
2. Front panel controls
3. The power brick is not so huge that it crowds your power strip.
4. Front panel plug for mp3 that cuts around primary sound source.
5. Non-distorted, clear sound. Good for jazz, classical, most pop.

Cons:
1. None of the parts detach from each other, so you can only place the speakers the distance of the existing cord, which is about 3'.
2. The nice design takes up a bit more desk space than I like, and there is no wall mount hole on the back.
3. There is only a "tone control" not a separate bass and treble. SO you only get one, or the other.
4. Bass is too weak for rock or R&B, etc.

Conclusion:

When you take the $27.39 price into account (current Amazon price) these are really good value speakers. They sound good, set up easily and don't look as cheap as other speakers in the category. However, if you expect these to blow away some Bose PC speakers, you will be disappointed. Your wallet, however, will be happier. You can also get part way there by upgrading to the Altec BXR 1221 three piece set for $29.95. For the extra $2, you get bass and a "little" freer speaker placement.

Great speaker5
Great speaker set for the budget. Easy to set up, clear sound, and powerful bass and subwoofer. The remote has many control buttons and tuning individual speakers is simple. I connect my PC, TV, and PS to this speaker system and the surrounding effects are amazing. One minor thing is that the cable for rear speakers is a little bit short and I bought a RCA extension cable to place those rear speakers behind my sofa.

amazing.....5
I did not except these speakers to be so epic, PS3 in dolby digital 5.1 and dts 5.1, is amazing, alot like logitech z-5500, it is a cheap and good speaker system, i recommend u buy it!!!

Good sound quality from compact speakers5
We installed these speakers in our kitchen, where we regularly play our media players while cooking, and entertaining. Even placed on top of the kitchen cabinets and turned all the way up, they put out crisp, clear sound that is well balanced. Both the high and low ends are well handled by these speakers, yet they are considerably smaller than other desktop speakers we own. Unfortunately for laptop owners, these are not USB powered, making them a less convenient choice, but they are an excellent option for desktop users, or those who generally set up their laptop in a setting near an outlet. Also, at this price point, I would have expected a remote. We are very please with the sound qualityof these speakers.

These small speakers pack a serious punch.3
I am not a speaker expert nor am I an audiophile. I have several ipods and a vast musical library of classic rock, jazz & classical and these little speakers are great sounding. They are rugged, metal frames and the sound they produce is warm and crisp. Very good lows, mids & highs. Very impressive for such a small footprint. Set up is normal for speakers, plug then in etc. Nice blue glow on the volume knob is a nice touch. I use these connected to my Airport Express to listen to my itunes library remotely but you could use for any purpose really. I think its be overkill to use these as just computer speakers though.

ONLY downside and why I gave them 3 starts instead of 4/5 is there is NO remote included, thats a shame. Great little pair of speakers and no remote. That should have been a no brainer. Even my low cost sony ipod speakers have a remote. That would have made these an excellent deal.

Okay speakers, but not great3
Other reviewers have covered the audio details much better than I could possibly do. I'm not an audiophile, and the technical details of sound systems are way beyond me.

So all I can do is review these speakers as a "layman", based on my listening experience. I don't use speakers with an MP3 player, so I can't rate this product on that basis. The only way I use speakers is with my PC, on my desktop.

These speakers are definitely much better than the ones I was using with my laptop system, which are pretty generic $35 range speakers. The sound from the HD50 is much cleaner and brighter. As other reviewers had said, there's not much to speak of in the bass range. I played with the equalizer from my sound driver, and got something acceptable. But you're not going to get big, booming bass from these speakers.

I listen to a variety of music, including classical, rock, new age, folk, swing and big band. I tried the HD50 with all of them, and the sound was very good. I didn't hear any distortion, even when I turned the volume up pretty high on the speakers. I played streaming radio and CDs, and also streaming video and DVDs. Oh, and games, can't forget games. The HD50 performed well with all of them.

These are great speakers for my use... sitting a couple of feet from my ears, playing background music while I'm working, or playing games when I'm taking a break. But I'm not sure they're worth the price Creative is asking for them.

Incredible Sound Quality5
Sound quality is unbelievable for a unit so small and inexpensive. Wow!!! Overall quality is excellent!!!

Two thumbs up!5
For the money this Philips system cannot be beaten! The first song I played was Heart's "What About Love" and this system filled my small home-office with beautiful music! Next I watched "The Matrix";WOW! The speakers are separated nearly 10' apart & are on bookshelves nearly 8' high; who needs 5.1 with a powerful sound-stage like this! The bass is moderate compared to more powerful systems but its there when you need it and the satellites sound clean & crisp at high volumes! Two thumbs up.

Its nice for the price, but not really loud 3
Its a great steal for the price, and the sub is really strong and can shake your walls, but sadly the speakers them selves are very bad. You cant really listen to anything in a low volume, and the music herd all the way high, is really not that loud. The sub overpowers the speakers. This is a good setup if you don't want amazing volume and sound quality.

Good sound and low price, with some things to consider4
My laptop has XP Media Edition software, but really bad speakers. If I want to listen to anything, I need external speakers or headphones. For the price, this Altec Lansing Three-Piece Speaker System does a good job. The bottom line is good, well balanced sound for a low price.

Now the caveats:

On speakers that require an external power source, I would have expected to be able to crank up the volume a bit more. When listening to modern CDs or MP3s on my PC I can turn up the sound high enough to fill a large room without distortion, but when watching an old movie (say 1930s vintage) I can turn up the volume all the way and the dialog is barely audible. Other speakers I've used don't seem to have that issue, but they were more expensive.

This system may be compact for a shelf or desk, but it's not tiny and don't expect it to be portable. The set up is lightweight but rather bulky. The subwoofer is roughly the size of an elongated Kleenex Boutique tissue box; the satellites are approximately the size of Campbell's soup cans.

There are lots of wires, too. The right satellite, the one with the on/off and volume control knobs, has four separate wires: 1) hardwire to the other satellite, 2) hardwire to the jack that goes to the audio source (computer or MP3 player), 3) a jack to connect to the hardwire coming from the subwoofer, and 4) a jack for the wire to the AC adapter. That's a lot of wire coming out of the back of one soup can size speaker!

The wall plug is on the AC adapter. Something to consider if you are already using outlets for the PC, monitor, printer, and whatever other peripherals you need - a power strip may have multiple outlets, but this can easily use one and cover up another.

If none of these observations is a deal breaker for you, then the low price and good sound are a good value.

Lots of punch for the price and size5
After spending big $ on Bose speakers for my computer only to have the unit die in 2 years and Bose charging so much for out of warranty repair, I'd be better off buying new ones - I vowed to never spend that kind of money again. Good thing - because I no longer have that kind of dispensable income! Enter these Altec Lansing speakers.

I like having the manual control right on the speaker if I need to suddenly turn down to hear if a phone is ringing or what the dog is barking about.

I hear no rattle when the volume is up - something you typically experience in cheap speakers. The cheap ones typically are a "you get what you pay for" experience... adequate for a small cube at work, but not much else. Not so with these little power-houses. Am I comparing these to Bose? No. These do not attempt to be in the same class as luxury end speakers. I've used a number of low-cost speakers before, however, and these are among the best I've used. I find these perform better than my JBL Duets, which tend to rattle if the volume is cranked up. The subwoofer lets you feel what you can't hear... the base that is too much for most satellite speakers is faithfully transmitted where you can feel it as much as you hear it.

For low-cost computer speakers (or even for an iPod!), the landscape is FULL of competitors - but the cheap ones are typically just that - cheap. Altec Lansing did a good job in making a set-up that's attractive, uses a small desktop footprint and has good sound that's affordable.

Not Bad for a Budget Speaker System4
I picked these up as a temporary solution to get some sound for my PC. My decision to purchase these was primarily because of my prior experience with an Altec Lansing ASC 495 system. Not yet available at Amazon, the BX1221 speakers were purchased at Walmart for $24.95.

When I first installed these I was horrified by the muffled, muted sound that came out of them. After fiddling with the equalizer software that came with my sound card I finally hit on a setting which provided much more crispness and ok bass. Then I went to work on the equalizer and WOW settings in Windows Media player. Once all the twiddling was finsihed I was really surprised by the good sound from this little budget system.

Altec Lansing says they are compact for a crowded desktop. Small, Yes. Compact, No. Due to the long design of the desktop units they actually take up more desk space than any previous speaker I've owned. They're about six inches long so take that into account before you purchase them.

Pros:
-Darn good sound once you adjust them to your preference
-Low Price
-Adequate power

Cons:
-Volume control is a thumbwheel on top of the right speaker
-On/Off switch is a rotory dial on the back of the right speaker
-Left Speaker is connected to the right via a short speaker cord, roughly 42", not allowing for a great deal of seperation
-No seperate volume control or adjustment available for the sub-woofer

Would I buy them again under the same circumstances? Probably. If you're short on cash they're a good value. They're far from a premium system but the installation is simple; they're just plug and play right out of the box. If all you want is an upgrade from 2.0 speakers that came with your computer, you will most likely be happy with the BX1221. Once I get moved I'll be going back to my old 5.1 surround system but until then I can still listen to my tunes without cringing at the sound quality.

Great Sound; Poor Electronic Control Quality3
Reviewed the quality of sound with comparable Bose 2.1 System and purchased HP because of significant price difference. Was VERY pleased with performance on home computer when listening to CDs or iPod.

Notes: 1) Each speaker and the control unit must be fed thru " electrical ports" in the desktop; single cable connection with three non-detachable wires feeding the speakers/control. Fit is "tight" but doable.
2) Control unit has headphone jack which purportably can be set to "turn-off" desk speakers when listening thru the headphones -- this has NEVER worked.
3) Control unit required disassembly to check/fix a cold solder connection to right speaker -- quit after 4 months; repaired.

Overall: Good looking and excellent sound quality for the price. A little more money spent by hp to upgrade the controller components would have resulted in a higher quality unit.

Better than you could expect5
Usually when you buy computer speakers, you don't expect them to have great quality. These continue to impress me. The bass is incredible and the quality and clarity make these speakers worth more than you pay for them. I would totally recommend them.

Great Product5
I bought these from HP's website and have owned them for a little over a year now. Excellent product and great value. I originally purchased these for listening to music off of my laptop. I did see that I could also use them to boost the sound on my Sony tv. Versatile and powerful. The only improvement I could recommend is a wireless remote but for the price, you definitely get more than what you pay for.

Altec Lansing M602 Speaker System for iPod (White)
From Altec Lansing Technologies

Introducing the Altec Lansing M602 powered audio system. Its the complete package: Striking good looks, plus rich, clear sound from its four custom-designed speakers. Whats more, the M602 is surprisingly affordable, so you can still send the kids to college. Just place your iPod into the M602s built-in dock and enjoy.

  • Brand: Altec Lansing
  • Model: M602
  • Original language: English
  • Dimensions: 7.60" h x 10.40" w x 16.00" l, 7.05 pounds

Your iPod is an ideal companion when you're on the move, but why restrict yourself to listening through headphones only? With the Altec Lansing M602 powered audio system, iPod listeners can enjoy crisp, high-definition sound anywhere in the home, from the living room to the garage. The M602 offers the complete package-- striking good looks, immersive sound, and an affordable price tag that won't clear out the bank account. Audio-wise, the system is equipped with a powerful digital amplifier, two specially engineered, 3-inch, full-range neodymium drivers, and two 1-inch silk- dome tweeters, all of which combine to deliver a full spectrum of pure, distinct sound. The resulting frequency range extends from 60 Hz to 20 kHz, an impressive performance for such a compact system. The unit also produces surprisingly deep bass thanks to the XdB bass-enhancement technology.

At the center of the M602 sits a universal dock that amplifies, recharges, and syncs your iPod while you listen. Simply drop your "dockable" iPod inside--the system is built for the iPod 3G, iPod 4G, iPod photo, iPod video, iPod mini, and iPod nano--and you're set. In addition, owners of older iPods or other MP3 players can use the system as well, as the M602 comes with a universal MP3 cradle and an auxiliary input. The cradle fits inside the universal dock for easy front and center storage. Perhaps the handiest feature, however, is the wireless remote, which lets you control the iPod and speaker functions from a distance. All the standard controls are available, including play, forward, back, volume, bass, treble, and standby. Just sit back and enjoy.

Other details an elegant, wall-mountable design that looks great on the living room table or the kitchen wall; a composite video output that lets you play your iPod video through most TVs (cable not included); and a headphone jack for private listening. The M602, which measures 14 by 8.2 by 5.4 inches (W x H x D), is backed by a one-year warranty.

M602 Replaced the IM75
Went to Sharper Image to get either a Bose or a Altec IM7 but once I got there they no longer had the IM7. The "Product Specialist: at the store said he returned more than he sold because the IM7 Door that you put the ipod in kept breaking off. My options were the M602 or the Bose. Now here is my Dilema...

I have the original ipod with no dock, and a video ipod, my sons have a mini and nano, and my wife has a shuffle. The Bose system will not play either the original or shuffle as it does not have a AV input jack. This means the Bose cannot play anything other than the Ipod Video, nano, and mini that I have.

Sound both are comparable. I wanted it for my kitchen and both sounded fine. The big difference was the bass that came from the M602. The Bose base was definately not as full.

So I saved a hundred bucks and got the M602 and have no regrets.

One great feature, it has a dock, that you can place any other MP3 player on and comes with a matching white cord for the AV input jack so you can play cd players too.

Bose lost my money mainly because of their inflexibility when they design their equipment as I had gift cards and would'nt have had to shell out any dough. Plus I love their Quietcomfort headphones. That is what you get for trying to shove your vision to the masses without thinking what the masses need.

Altec...You did a great job and listened. And it sounds great too.

Great sound! Great economy4
Orderded for my teenage daughter. This item is a nice size, not to big not too small. Sleek package. Sound is excellent! Perhaps not high-high end, but as good a sound as one would experience with headphones. Speakers have nifty blue LEDs in the speaker grill that light when adjusting volume to show level. I gave this unit 4 stars based on its high performance in relation to its price, which would have been worthy of 5 if it had a remote. Obviously, a newer version, which costs more, offers that.

Daughter has a Gen2 Nano which docks with no added adaptor. The ipod stands forward of the speakers a little bit.

This unit charges the ipod.

I recommend this item for someone wanting satisfactory to better than satisfactory sound in an attractively designed package.

Do NOT buy this item!1
I bought one of these units, and worked wonderfully for about a month. Then, the sound would cut in and out like the power was being switched on and off.
I replaced it with another unit, which also worked great for about a month, and then it had the same problem. This is, obviously, a design flaw, as I see other posts here describing the same problem.
The sound, when the unit works well, is okay, not great. I bought it because it was $100 cheaper than the Bose system (which friends have had their own prolems with).
I would not buy this unit: it is a poor design that is plagued with problems.
