To Much Noise These speakers have a loud hum in them. It sounds like it's probably from the power (house power inherently has a low frequency hum which can "infect" sound systems). This is a well understood problem and can be almost completely eliminated with the use of a few cheap parts so they obviously wanted their product to just be cheap, not actually usable. So much for getting inexpensive speakers. If you really can't afford more expensive speakers, look into speakers that are powered by USB. Or maybe there are speakers as cheap as these that actually have the required filtering. But I have to agree with the other reviewer: only get these if there are no other options. There ARE other options so... Only worth getting if you have NO other option They say you get what you pay for, but sometimes you get less than what you pay for. I got these as part of a bundle from an eBay purchase, and they are easily the worst pair of computer speakers I've ever heard. They emit a hum even when the power button is off. Turn on the power, and the hum just gets louder even with the volume all the way down. The sound is what you'd expect from $5.00 speakers: hollow and tinny. The volume is logarithmic to an extreme, i.e., when you turn the knob up just slightly from zero, the volume increases dramatically, but after turning literally just a few degrees, the increase in volume is negligible. If you have *no* concern for quality and simply need to be able to hear something on your computer, then these will do, but you can find much better speakers for only a few dollars more.

this sucks I would definitely not recommend these to anyone.. As soon as I opened them I was excited because they looked great and I was a bit skeptical of the price but I went ahead and bought them.. The wiring was all wrong or something because when plugged in all they done was make a scratchy distorted static sound so my husband had to re-wire them then tape it up with electric tape.. Iwouldnt waste your money on this mess honestly Big The main area is bigger than I thought it would be. Speakers are small but produce big sounds. If you like base it's really good because it's got it's own tuner for controlling it, which goes pretty high. Overall really good quality. I like them a lot.

Designed for the Way Enthusiasts Play Their Music Today Computers are becoming the new home stereo for many people. The computer is where digital consumers organize and archive their music, movies, and TV shows. They want an audio system that sounds great and plays loud without distorting their favorite artist, movie scene or video game. The Expressionist Ultra is designed to be a true music speaker that happens to work with computers - good enough to replace the traditional home stereo system. Further, the showcase design of the Expressionist Ultra is designed to look good in the main living space where the computer "entertainment center" is becoming more common. The contemporary industrial design of the satellites celebrates the audio components by emphasizing visible acoustic components set into a translucent bezel. This angled design carries over to the trapezoid-shaped subwoofer, which is functionally engineered to break up troublesome standing waves to draw out every note of high fidelity and uncolored sound. They Havn't Gotten It Right... I have to say that this product was a love-hate relationship but ended up being boxed back up and returned. I've been spending quite some time researching a good speaker system for my office and this model came up. It's a new model (Sep'09ish) and was purchased in October and very few places have reviews out for this let alone pictures (thanks to the person who submitted photos on Amazon!). The looks of this system along with the touted quality side of this is what sold me. I come from an audiophile up-bringing so I will say that my ear is a bit more tuned and I have certain expectations on sound. My first computer speakers were Altec Lansings and by far the best speakers on the market at the time let alone I got a lot of "wow" out of them. I've owned most brands of computer speakers (Logitech's top of the line, Creative's, Klipsch) and saw these and thought they'd be perfect for the style of my office (very modern). I opened them up, set them up accordingly, plugged them in and powered them up and immediately hear the familiar hiss that my first Altec's had had (their only fault) in '98. I kept thinking "there's no way a model this expensive and new would be like this" and changed everything from the inputs (removed the 3.5mm jack all together) to the placement of the speakers (shielding issues, etc) and still the same hiss all the way until you turn the volume down to zero. At max volume there is an electrical hum that, yes, you definitely will not hear this is you have music playing, but it's noise, and noise in my books is a no-no. I wanted to love these speakers but looks cannot out weigh their performance. With this, I'll be moving on to a much more expensive option, reference monitors and balanced audio, yes a little bit more money but worth it. For a cheaper solution then this, i would recommend the M-Audio AV40's. The Pros: - Beautiful Modern Look - Simple Hook Up - Easy-to-use Volume Controller - Sound Quality is "Ok" to the casual listener The Cons: - Consistent Hiss even at near-off levels - Electrical High-Pitch Hum at near max levels (no sound playing) - Proprietary PS/2 Style Speaker Plugs Making it Difficult to Do Extensions if Need-be A really good 2.1 desktop speaker system I needed to replace my old 2.1 desktop speaker system with something new and improved. After searching and reading reviews I got Altec Lansing's MX6021. Here's my thoughts after having played around with it for a few weeks. Placing my order online the box arrived a few days later. I opened up the original box and noticed that the system was packaged really well. The sub-woofer's driver was covered over with a heavy piece of plastic. Then the entire sub was covered in plastic. The satellites were packaged the same way. The wired remote control, RCA adapter and audio cable were wrapped too. The entire system is then housed in heavy styrofoam. There's also a complete setup diagram located on the box. It's nice that Altec Lansing went to that much trouble with the packaging. What you get... 1 - sub-woofer with a 6.5" driver with a paper cone, foam surround and a forward firing vent hole. 2 - Satellites have a 1" aluminum horn tweeter driver. A 3" midrange driver with a paper cone and a foam surround. 1 - Wired remote that controls power, treble, bass and volume. It also accomodates 1 headphone and 1 auxiliary input. 1 - 3.5mm audio cable to connect your computer or audio device to the sub-woofer. 1 - RCA adapter to connect to a TV. 1 - Safety instructions and warranty card The sub-woofer is made of particle board and feels very solid. The midrange on the satellites are housed in plastic tube canisters. The tweeters are housed in plastic too. Each driver has it's own protective cover to keep your fingers out. Inspecting a little closer I noticed that the sub-woofer and satellites have rubber feet. The sub-woofer has four large ones in each corner and the satellites have three. Two up front and one large one in the rear. Even the wired remote has four small ones. The satellites and wired remote are all hard-wired. The sub-woofer has the AC cord hard-wired also. The plugs themselves are a proprietary ps/2 type mini-din except for the 3.5mm audio cable. You plug in the satellites, wired remote and 3.5mm audio cable into the back of the sub-woofer. Plug the other end of the 3.5mm audio cable into your computer or audio device. Then plug the sub-woofer into the AC outlet. Hit the wired remote to turn the system on and your done. Btw, all of the connections are good and tight. This includes those leading to the back of the sub-woofer, headphone and auxiliary inputs. It's nice to have a 2.1 system with a small foot print and a wired remote. However, that doesn't make for a good sounding system. I tested the MX6021 while playing games, listening to music and watching movies. Gaming with this system is simply awesome! You've got the highs from the tweeters for those high cracking sounds. The mids from the midrange when tweeters and a sub just ain't enough. The low lows from the sub-woofer for the boom boom effects. I really like the fact that the sub-woofer's speaker and vent are front firing. You can put it in any corner or tuck it away and still have the speaker and vent facing forward. Music is pretty good and better than average. I mainly play DTS and FLAC files and I like what I hear. The system is not reference monitor quality costing hundreds more, but adequate for what this system is and how much it costs. Movies pretty much fall into the same category as gaming. Great for a 2.1 arrangement, but certainly not equal to a 5.1 system or greater for ambiance. With a signal to noise ratio of 75db the system can pull a maximum of 200watts. You have the ability to get alot of sound out of these. However, you can get a great deal of clarity too. Having seperate amplifiers for seperate drivers helps. This means you can send different frequencies to different drivers at the same time. At higher volume the drivers won't drown each other out. Tuning in the bass is no problem either. You can have a little or alot. When I say alot I mean alot! These speakers have the ability to shake walls and windows if given a chance. For a desktop system I was really impressed. The wired remote is very interesting. You can control the entire system from here. This includes the power, treble, bass and volume. The treble and bass buttons act as toggle switches. Hit one or the other to activate then adjust accordingly. You can fine tune or rapidly adjust all three functions depending on how long you hold down the adjuster. There's also audio, visual and sense feedback for all three functions. The remote makes a slight clicking sound that you can actually feel when you make fine adjustments. Located at the base are these very tiny amber led lights. About the diameter of a sewing needle. They visually tell you what the treble, bass and volume are set at. The lights range from one to seven. Seven being the highest setting for these three functions. If you want to fine-tune then you can place the led's at half points. Lets say three and a half or six and a half or whatever. The led's will actually dim at the half point letting you know. During inactivity the led's loop through a five pattern led dance. Now I don't care much for large or bright led indicators on hardware. Luckily, the leds are neither large or bright. As long as the remote isn't sitting right in your face you won't notice them. There is also one headphone and one auxiliary jack located near the base. Overall, I found the remote very convenient and very easy to use. Warranty is one year parts/labor not including return shipping. You can get a free additional one year warranty if you register within thirty days. This can be done at Altec Lansings website. The MX6021 is a really good 2.1 desktop speaker system. Nothing about this system feels cheap or poorly made. It produces good sound with a quality build and excellent functionality. Better than expected I still have an old Dell computer that I'd bought in 2002-2003. The speakers that came with it were made by Altec Lansing, and even today, they sound better than most of what you'll hear in the

What a great little set of speakers with a BIG sound! When I received this box and saw how small it was -- I was a little leary wondering how such a little set of speakers and sub-woofer would come through. I wanted to replace a much bulkier system that had extremely long and cumbersome wires and a sub-woofer twice as big. I loved the sound of this set but noticed some hum coming from the wiring to the sub-woofer. I realized that it had to be a grounding issue on my side and it seems to have dissipated. When I got all of my volume controls set up, I was pleased to hear some beautiful The Art Of The Guitar - Sabicas (Digitally Remastered) Sabicas Flamenco to test the highs and the lows. While this does not have the same sound quality of my larger system (a Scott surround sound system) it is also very different. The Logitech Z313 speakers are small and light and made of plastic through and through. The speakers are very nice looking and will compliment most towers or notebooks today with a silver and black design. The sub-woofer is much more sturdy and smaller than most. This is great if you want to use this system with your docked laptop. Don't expect the world out of this system - you won't be paying a bundle, this is an economical system for sure. But expect compactness, crisp sound quality for what these are and a great price. Definitely not high end ... but for a general speaker set and sub-woofer for a laptop or desktop, good stuff! You'll also enjoy the little pod remote (which is unfortunately attached to another wire on the system, thus making it more difficult to maneuver) to control volume and on/off functions. It's cute and functional. The reason for 4 stars was that I found the pod to maneuver and wished it was wired alone instead of attached to the sub-woofer. A little awkward for me. I did like the placement of the headphone jack on the pod. A nice feature indeed. 4 stars. Good for games and movies, not so good for music The Logitech Z313 speaker system was used to replace my old Altec Lansing ACS52 speaker system. First of all the speakers were super easy to connect to the computer. It took me longer to unpack the items from the box than it did to hook the speakers up to my computer. All you have to do is plug in one end of the control pod to the subwoofer, plug in the chord to the computer that is attached to the pod, plug the speakers into the subwoofer, plug in the power and your ready to go. The control pod is nice as it makes it really easy to adjust the volume and turn the speakers off and on. What I didn't like about the pod is that it is wired to both the subwoofer and the computer. Just what I didn't need was more wires cluttered behind my desk. I first tried playing some games and the speakers sounded really nice with the games. You could hear a lot of little things that were going on in the background on the games. Next I watched a move which I was also very happy with the sound. Last I listened to some music and this is where I became very disappointed with these speakers. I listen to a lot of music on my computer and the sound that came through these speakers was not the greatest. There were great highs and great lows, but these speakers lack any mid-range sound. I listen to a lot of rock and metal and some of the music sounded like you were listening to it through a tin can since there is no mid-range. I was able to crank the speakers up nice and loud and the sound didn't break up at all. The bass was nice, but it wasn't as booming as my old system was. Again, the difference may be due to the lack of mid-range on these speakers and not to any lack of bass. Plugging headphones into the pod was simple but the volume control on the pod does nothing when you have headphones plugged in. I had to go into my computer volume control to change volume settings while listening through headphones. Overall, if you are looking for speakers to play games and watch movies, these will fill that bill without a problem. If your looking for speakers to listen to a lot of music with, you may want to pass these over and look for something else. Clean and Clear Sounds Plus Deep Bass at a Reasonable Price! This Logitech Z313 is referred as a 2.1 speaker system (2 satellite speakers plus 1 sub-woofer). If you want to hear deep bass in your music, a sub-woofer is a must, and it should be placed on the floor for best results. Compared to Logitech's Z520 2.0 (only 2 speakers, no sub-woofer) speaker system, which I recently also tested, it is quite apparent that Z313 has much deeper bass, although the Z313 system costs less than half the price of the Z520. If you listen to music at relatively low to normal sound volume, I would recommend the Z313. At higher volumes, the satellite speakers will not be able to crank out sound loud enough, and most of what you will hear are thumps from the sub-woofer. The Z520 is capable of much louder music without distortion; perhaps that's why it costs a lot more than the Z313.

Sound quality is a step up from Logitech Z-2300 I moved out of college this spring and had to sell my old 2.1 system, a Logitech Z-2300. Since I moved I've been looking at various options for a replacement. I liked my Logitech set quite a lot, especially for their incredible power and bass kick. However, I felt that it really lacked oomph in the all-important lower midrange, between where the satellites roll off and where the subwoofer kicks in. Also the subwoofer for that set is comically huge, taking up a third of the space under a normal desk. Considering the weak midrange and absurd subwoofer I had been used to, I first examined a component system with a stereo amp and two proper bookshelf speakers (no sub), but I couldn't find a complete setup in a price range that made sense for me, and nothing I looked at would fit on my desk. Resigned, I looked at a number of 2.1 computer speakers, and almost bought another instance of my old system before stumbling across these gems. I'd heard some Boston Acoustics speakers that impressed me, and I figured that BA would put some real effort into setting their computer speakers apart from the rest. I was not to be disappointed. Both these and the Logitechs have an appealing bright tone and good precision in the highs, but the Logitechs always felt somewhat disconnected as the sound traveled down the registers, jumping from satellite to sub with that missing midrange, and I was worried these would fall apart too. The Logitechs also suffered from an overpowered sub that I could never balance properly against the satellites, no matter how much tweaking I did in my EQ. However, Boston has created a well-balanced, cohesive system that shines across the board. They won't blow out windows at your next party, but that's not the point. The sub is still large but much more sensibly-sized than the monstrous Logitech one. If you're looking for thumping bass and raw power, go for the Logitechs; they can't be beat for price/performance. If you want accuracy and fidelity, though, I'd go for these Boston speakers any day. The best computer speakers! I was somewhat skeptical of the other reviews for these speakers, but I always heard that Boston Acoustics made good speakers and decided to get these for my wife's computer since she is an avid music lover. She loves all sorts of music from world music, to R&B, to music from the 20s, etc It all sounds so much better coming through these speakers. The sound reproduction is so crisp and clear with good range. I was just stunned at how well the speakers sounded. I am truly envious and am going to replace my Altec Lansings 2.1 speakers with these when the time comes! The person who just wants a lot of bass and the system just to thump, this is not your system. If you want a good range, from deep lows to crisp highs with a decent midrange, and you're looking for accurate sound reproduction, these speakers are for you! My only complaint is the size of the subwoofer. It's pretty big, but we just put it under the desk, but if you're short on space, you should be forewarned :^) Give them a chance. I was looking for a musical step up from the great Logitech Z-2300 my daughters use to blast hip-hop, so I ordered these speakers on the strength of reviews here. After placing my order, I started to regret my choice when I discovered several 'lukewarm' reviews elsewhere, referring to them as overly bright or 'sibilant', and stating preferences for other speakers like the HK Sound Sticks. With this prejudice, I had a similar opinion upon initial listening. But after tweaking the bass setting and extended listening, I think they're marvelous. I'm not sure if it's because they've broken-in, or just that I've become accustomed to their sound. What I do know is that, to me, they sound very detailed and accurate. Tight bass, full mid range & highs. I'm hearing stuff in my music I usually only get from headphones. I recommend placing these on small stands to bring the tweeter up to ear level for best effect. The Z-2300 may fill a room better, but I think the MM226 is a better choice for the critical music listener sitting at the computer.

Elegant Design for the Modern Home The Expressionist Bass FX3022 was designed with today's digital home in mind. With a glossy black high-tech look, the speakers are just as much at home on your computer desk as they are out in your living room with your furniture. And at just 5.25 x 10 x 5.25 inches (WxHxD) and without a subwoofer to lug, you can easily move the system around wherever you need them, be it the living room, computer room, den, or porch. High Performance and Great Versatility Whether you are watching a video clip on the web or using your notebook computer to DJ your latest party, the FX3022 provides a great multimedia platform for all your digital media needs. Featuring 25 watts RMS of total continuous power, the system can easily fill your room with satisfying sound. With an auxiliary input jack and controls built right into the speaker, you can easily connect and adjust a source other than your computer, such as a CD player, DVD player, or iPod. Bass Built Into the Base Instead of the subwoofer that most other speaker systems rely on, the Expressionist Bass system builds a four-inch long-throw subwoofer right into the base of each speaker. The system has a downward firing orientation, causing the bass to reflect off the desktop and create a radiating 360-degree sound field for convincing slam in the lower registers. And thanks to psycho-acoustic algorithms from the system's integrated Maxx Bass technology, you get close to an extra octave of lower bass. The end result is that you get twice the bass in half the space. Two 40mm Drivers for Full-Range Sound Specially engineered 40mm drivers provide the mids and highs with great clarity. The two drivers are compartmentalized in a sealed chamber, ensuring that the pressure of the subwoofer doesn't mix and muddle the sound. The internal chamber features a rounded architecture that decreases harsh diffractions (sound waves that bounce around in otherwise square corners) and standing waves (which get stuck in otherwise square corners) that can "color" the audio that you hear. What this means to you is a cleaner, more natural sound. The Expressionist Bass FX3022 is backed by a one-year warranty. What's in the Box Speaker system, 3.5mm audio cable, power adapter, user's guide, quick connect guide. Bring your laptop and speakers out to DJ your next party.
Size matters. Where stereo speakers are concerned, size matters. The size of the speakers matters, and so does the size or gauge of the cable that connects the speakers to each other and to the audio source. For decent bass one must have a speaker surface or speaker surfaces large enough to move a certain amount of air. The Altec Lansing FX3022 Expressionist Bass speakers produce the best sounding bass I have heard on 2-way speakers designed for PCs and MP3 players in their price range. The bass speakers, or subwoofer drivers as Altec Lansing refers to them, are large enough (ALs specs say 4" each; the visible surface measures about 3 1/2" across) to push enough air volume to produce a satisfyingly deep bass sound, and to cause whatever desktop or tabletop they are set on to vibrate. The unique down-firing design of the subwoofer drivers amplifies the bass (as long as the speakers are on a flat, hard surface as opposed to, say, a thick carpet; even a thin tablecloth would absorb rather than reflect some of the sound). And the 1.5" "full-range speaker drivers," as AL describes them, that are near the top of each cone-shaped speaker really do put out a full range of sound, meaning good midrange as well as good treble. As I write this I have these speakers connected to my laptop and I am listening to a live broadcast of an opera from the Metropolitan Opera House, and the sound quality is excellent and full. The orchestra and the soprano, mezzo, baritone, and bass singers all sound clear, full, and undistorted. I have also used these speakers connected to an MP3 player set to play a selection of rock tunes during workouts, and the bass and overall sound is most impressive. The driving bass inspires a vigorous exercise session. I don't know the gauge of the cable that connects the speakers, but it is considerably fatter than cables I've seen on any other PC and MP3 player speakers. I imagine that AL designed it that way because thicker speaker cable results in better quality sound. The lower the gauge, the thicker the cable, and as Amanda Moore writes on Crutchfield dot com's page on choosing and installing speaker wire, "the lower the gauge is...the better its capacity to pass the amplified audio signal." As other reviewers have noted, the speakers are hardwired to each other, which means that they have to be moved together. Because the bass speakers or subwoofer drivers are exposed, this means that one must be extra careful when moving these speakers. These speakers are almost the size of small bookshelf speakers, but because of their tapered cone-like shape they occupy less space than they would were they rectangular. They are just a bit shorter than the height of a roll of paper towels, and have a footprint almost as wide as a new roll of "giant" paper towels (or just a tad less wide than a new roll of Scott 1000 sheet per roll bathroom tissue). Some time last year I purchased a pair of Creative Labs T20 speakers from Amazon and I have reviewed them here, and I remain mightily impressed and pleased with them. But since coming into possession of the Altec Lansing FX3022s I am beginning to wonder which speakers I prefer to listen to. Sometimes the ALs have too much bass, e.g., when I am listening to spoken audio or am watching online news clips and the like. But sometimes the CL T20s don't have enough bass and oomph compared to the ALs (which makes sense considering that the CL speakers simply aren't built to push as much air as the ALs are capable of pushing). I love bass and I think one must be a bass lover to appreciate the Expressionist Bass speakers. But I don't love bass so much that I would want a car with a trunk that has been turned into a huge subwoofer, and I don't like it when I hear cars and vans, etc., that have that kind of overpowering bass emanating from them. I don't find the bass on these speakers overwhelming, but I do imagine that someone who cannot say that they love bass might find these speakers not to their taste. One negative about these speakers that I will note is that there is no way to adjust the bass on the speakers themselves; only the volume can be adjusted. Follow up written on March 12, 2009: I wrote above that I was beginning to wonder which pair of speakers I preferred listening to, the Altec Lansing FX3022s or the Creative Labs T20s. Since then I've decided that I prefer the Creative Labs because to my ears, while the Altecs have what I describe above as a good midrange, comparison tells me that the Creatives have a very good midrange (in the sense of having greater subtlety, depth, and overall clarity; on a 1 -5 scale I give the Creatives a 5 for midrange and a 4 for bass, and the Altecs a 4 for midrange and a 5 for bass). I'm considering upgrading to a pair of Creative Labs T40s. For Bass Freaks I am fairly certain I'll get flamed and accumulate a bunch of "not helpful" votes but too bad. These speakers are bass, bass and more bass. If you are the kind of person who likes their brains to jiggle from bass note vibrations, don't hesitate to send for these. I have never heard desktop speakers that have anywhere near the amount of bass as these do. These are not little polite things. They take up a fair amount of real estate on your desk so make sure you have room for them. The construction quality is good; volume control is easy to use and accessible. Be careful when you handle them because the woofer is open at the bottom and you might poke your finger into them if you pick them up the wrong way. Also, I don't like the fact that the cord connecting the left and right speakers is not detachable. Right away the first thing I noticed about these speakers when playing a CD through them is that they pump out a tremendous amount of thumping, flabby bass. They made the entire computer table shake and I could feel the vibrations in my chair. It is absolutely unnatural and after a while it becomes torturous. It does not faithfully reproduce recordings because of the over emphasis on bass. The midrange and treble isn't bad, but it is overwhelmed by the bass. If you like bass, you will like these. If you like balance or finesse, look elsewhere. These are not high-fidelity speakers. They will get your attention but like someone with too much makeup, they quickly become tiring. Two stars for the solid construction quality and if you can tame the bass they would sound fair, but these are way overpriced. Great Speakers For Any Occasion For speakers that size, they have a great range of sound and they are great for parties and campouts. I really like the way they are powered with an AC to DC cord. That way, you can buy a 12 volt jumper battery from any auto parts store and power the speakers with a "cigarette" plug and a DC adapter for notebook computers. You can listen to the speakers at locations where there is no electricity. They are pricey for computer speakers, but they are amazing. Yet, they won't compare with home hi fi speakers.

superb system for the price conscious Ok so many people may think lower end or lower priced products are garbage. Well I have a bedroom with a toshiba 42 inch 1080p LCD and oppo dvd (hd upscaler) player, also an xbox 360, this frisby system handles it all. I can whack the volume up full and get NO DISTORTION....the 5.1 works great for this size room. Although obviously a bigger room you may want to consider a more powerful system. The bass is responsive, each "section" (center, rear front bass) is controllable and adjustable. There are 4 aux inputs which was very handy given I have so many things plugged in (although you only get true 5.1 with the direct 5.1 input and not the aux, the aux still does a great job of "mimmicking" 5.1 with a very nice surround sound. Ive tried cheaper systems before and this was the last time I thought I'd give a lower price system a try Im very glad I did, the display is easy to read, no stupid flashing light on standby, and the blue LED and magnified display is a nice touch. for the money, absolute steal!! Don't buy Don't buy ANYTHING from Cyber Planet, I bought a similar surround sys. It was short the necessary wiring and manual. Three weeks later I still don't have the completing pkg. When asked to return, I was informed that a 20% restocking charge would apply and I would have to pay the freight charges back. Thanks to Amazon I got a refund in full, and still have the speakers!!!

Cerwin-Vega Cvhd-12S Cvhd Series 12-Inch Front-Firing Powered Subwoofer
From Cerwin Vega

The CVHD-12S 12" subwoofer is designed for big bass. The built in amplifier has an impressive 250 watts of power to kick out. If you are after a great sounding woofer, look no further than Cerwin Vega.
Amazon Sales Rank: #110496 in Consumer Electronics Brand: CERWIN VEGA Model: CVHD-12S Dimensions: 19.75" h x 21.00" w x 21.75" l, 58.20 pounds

CerwinVega quality has dropped since being bought by Stanton Group I bought this sub expecting great things, and overall I was disappointed. The sub does pack a lot of bass, but generally it's boomy, loose bass without real punch or control. The louder you turn it up the louder the boomy, hummy bass becomes, but it never transcends to the kick/thump you want. Also, and this is my biggest gripe with the unit, after a few months of use the amp started to die and now the sub makes a cracking noise any time it's in standby and sometimes even when it's on. It pops, snaps, and generally annoys me so much that I've replaced it with a Klipsch SUB-12 that goes MUCH lower and sounds much more controlled. It also has a lot more power for solid kicks. I think CerwinVega is just a name now, the quality is gone since the company was sold to the Stanton Group, a Chinese consortium that makes the subs at bottom dollar, slaps the CW name on them. Buyer beware. DOA I bought the CVHD speaker package because of great reviews from sites like cnet. I wired my living room and hooked all the speakers up to my new pioneer elite reciever and the autocalibration didn't recognize the sub. Turns out, its because the sub is dead. I took it to a speaker repair shop to connect it to a known source (to rule out my cable or receiver as the cause of the problem) and they verified it was nonfunctional. The sub itself looks great and the other speakers sound good, but I have to say that I might listen to the other reviewers who say that cerwin vega's quality is questionable. I am reviewing the sub here, but I have to add some other things about the cvhd package that I found. Of the brass knobs that screw into the back of the speakers, one was machined to an incorrect diameter so that it wouldnt fit into the bracket they included with the speakers. It was a good thing that I hadn't planned on mounting my center speaker or I would have had to wait for the company to send me another piece. Also, the plastic dry wall anchors were very flimsy, two broke after drilling the screw in place, so two speakers are only held up to the wall with three screws instead of four. Little signs of lack of quality control like those make me regret somewhat that I went with cerwin vega. I am not so sure that this system will last very long, and I would take this into account if you are considering buying from them. Awesome sub for the price I have had this sub for about a year now, and it has made a huge difference to my home theater. It is definitely a house shaker! I have it coupled with a Polk RM20 5 speaker set (the CVHD speakers were too big for me) and a Panasonic XR55 digital receiver. Make sure you check the dimensions though - this thing is huge!

Sony 2.1 Personal Speakers (Black)
From Sony

Amazon Sales Rank: #5787 in Consumer Electronics Color: Black Brand: Sony Model: SRSDB500 Dimensions: 1.00" h x 1.00" w x 1.00" l, 1.00 pounds

I guess i'll be the first for a review! Not sure why no one has not made a review on this yet but I just received mine and have it all hooked up. It's exactly what I needed. I'm using it for my TV only to watch movies and play Xbox. It has two rear RCA plugs for input only and the two speaker input plugs. Thats all thats on the back of the subwoofer but thats all that I needed. I have it hooked to my TV and from there I play my Xbox and movies through it. The quality of Sony is great and the sound is very strong. AND best of all it does come with a WIRELESS remote control. Why theres never a picture of that on this site or anywhere I have no idea. Plus the details on Amazon say that it is a wired controller and that is not correct. The remote controls volume, mute, bass, treble, input, power. On the front of the woofer, theres a secondary input for an MP3 player plus headphone input. You can also control the bass etc.. from the front of the woofer. I'd like to add that the woofer is as big as a standard stereo woofer. You can also control the volume if you disable the TV speakers ( if you have that option on the TV ) and just turn up the woofer and leave it at a high volume so then you just adjust the TV's volume instead that way you can use your TV remote only if you want. Or you can do it vise versa and use the woofers remote instead. I've looked at all the other powered speakers on amazon and these Sony's are perfect and at a great price. Order it for the PC as it does come with an adaptor with RCA's on one end and 1/8 plug on the other or get it for the TV as theres nothing better at this price. I'd also like to add that the pictures do not do the system justice.. The subwoofer is seriously impressive and massive as in expensive looking and big. Last note, this thing will blow the windows out! Serious bass and power. You have been warned! :) IN LOVE.... Omg! I love my speakers =) The packaging was wonderful. The original box was inside an amazon box w/ popcorn I made the order WED morning @ 3 AM & received THURS night @ 7 pm (FREE shipping option/NO PRIME ACCOUNT) The sound quality of the speakers is tremendous that my floor & walls are shaking. My friend was so impressed she just finished ordering them right now! LOVE IT! PRICE IS A STEAL!" O.M.G.... Are You Serious!!! I am on a tight budget with this economy like it is and just trying to save money, better myself, and still not sacrifice what I love doing, which one of those things is listening to music. My old computer speakers had to go. They were snap, crackle, and popping and I just wasn't enjoying music like I used to. So I took a leap of faith and decided to buy these speakers. I'm not even going to lie because I though... Boy, I might regret spending $130 on something that really wasn't a necessity, and even tried to cancel the order at the last minute, but it was too late, they were on their way. So I waited and prayed that they would be worth the money and they sure were! I got this big box and drug it in the house thinking... This better be worth it all the way. So I opened them up and it was in a spanking brand new glistening box. I couldn't wait to get them open and see what I spent my hard earned money on. So I took the little speakers out first and I was amazed at how big they were... Triple the size of my last. Then I took this big old sub woofer out and almost fainted on the floor at how big it was thinking... Where in the hell am I going to put this, but rest assured I found a place. LOL!!! When I hooked it up, I needed no bass at all because none at all is too much and the little speakers really put out. I love this speaker system and it goes perfect with my new 6 gig HP computer. I now feel like I got a $400 computer speaker system for one hell of a deal and wouldn't trade them for the world... Thanks Amazon!!!

Solid for 2.1, doesn't come close to 5.1 This is a detailed review: I, like many others, bought these speakers on recommendation from a few top reviews. My Creative 6.1 system died after 5 years, and rather than splurge on another 5.1+ system, I decided to go with 2.1 (I plan on linking everything up to a surround sound home theater system soon anyway). Here's the synopsis: The price is great for what you're getting compared to the rest of the market. The speakers are reasonably good looking. The subwoofer is compact, ideal compared to some of the monsters out there. With some tweaking I got the balance in the speakers about right (without tweaking there was too much treble and things sounded a bit tin-y). I'm using a sound card capable of all the Dolby and DTS goodies in 7.1 surround, so different cards might produce different results. My objections would be this: The volume control is big, and ugly. Hide it if you can (I put mine on top of the tower, below the level of the desk. The auxiliary function as an mp3 hookup is completely pointless, because anyone plugging an iPod into their PC is going to have their iTunes library on that machine already. It's also cheap feeling. It might be noteworthy that the size of the volume control is primarily due to this auxiliary funtion, as well as the circuitry is built into it as well. Other systems typically stick the circuitry on the subwoofer (which makes a lot more sense to me). Bottom line: It's a good system, especially after some minor tweaking. In terms of pure sound quality, which is probably what matters the most, it just doesn't stack up to a full surround system, ZDnet/CNET/other reviews or not. But, the volume control is its biggest drawback in my opinion. If you're looking for a value system, this is it. If you want a home theater, reach into those pockets and get a more robust system (at least you'll be helping the economy too). :) Sound Great... after I sent back the first set I got these speakers after reading a stellar review of them on PCMag.com. I opened them and started to test them. I noticed that the left channel speaker had a buzz or rattle every time a song with good mids was played. I plugged the speaker into the other channel to see if the problem was with the RCA port on the sub or with the speaker itself. I also tried to eliminate the source material by using 2 different MP3 players and several different songs, hoping that I would have to send them back... In the end I came to the conclusion that it was indeed the speaker. I placed an RMA with amazon and got a replacement set in like 2 days. The new set didn't have that problem and sounded just as great as I had expected. I feel like a mistake sometimes happens, could have been shipping or who knows... But amazon made it right quickly; for this reason I am giving them 4 stars instead of 5. Great Value - Great Sound - Great Speakers I bought these after reading several reviews. They are a real value for the money. I have played them for several friends and they cannot believe the sound for the price. I use these on my PC and they are great for just listening to music on the web or playing CD's. You will not go wrong with these speakers when compared to others that are a lot more money!

Fine for casual listening These 2.0 speakers are easy to set up, look classy (although I'd prefer a grill/cover instead of bare speaker cone) and are much more reasonably _sized_ for a desktop than the Gigaworks T20. The weight and feel of the volume knob does seem substantial. So fit and finish are a plus. The overall sound is reasonably clean. The Bass Flex design gives it very minor kick, but don't expect miracles. A comparably priced 2.1 system is probably going to be more pleasing for more types of listening. The highs actually seem slightly clipped to me vs other systems. Not terribly objectionable. In short, if you are a casual listener that just wants some music in the background without much fuss, these will almost certainly be a nice upgrade to your laptop speakers or the cheapies that came with your PC. If you want something more rich and enveloping, you'll probably want a 2.1 (3 piece) system that's not so compromised. Basically, better sound can be had for around the same price as these, as long as you can deal with the bass unit. If you have a golden ear, or are very particular about audio quality, why are you even reading this review? :p As a sidenote, this set breaks down/disconnects easily and so it's a fairly portable system. Great looks, great sound! I decided to stick with Creative Labs after a good experience with an old pair of computer speakers that were included with my previous PC. I connected these T12s to my new iMac and they sound great! The glossy black finish and chrome power/volume dial are very nice touches. I like how accessible the Aux and headphone ports are in the front of the speaker. Setup was easy as well. These speakers don't use USB connectivity so they don't take up any of your USB ports, and you are able to use them on other gadgets such as ipods/MP3 players, Televisions, etc. I'm giving the speakers 4 stars because I would've liked for them to have the mesh cover over the domes...you'll need to be extra careful in cleaning these. Amazon shipped the speakers fairly quickly with free shipping, even though they were sent out USPS. These are GREAT! These speakers are really great. I have a MacBook and I didn't realize all the sound that I was missing out on! It's great for watching TV online and listening to music. You can plug it into any music player that has a headset. It's great!

Don't let the system's small size fool you, though. With 33 watts RMS of total continuous power, the Expressionist PLUS can fill even a large room with satisfying sound. 1. Independently control the bass output. 2. Volume controls are located on satellites. 3. Easily adjust to find audio sweet spot. 4. Use AUX IN to connect another source. The three-part system comprises two satellites and a subwoofer. The satellites use precision-engineered 2-inch drivers that offer pin-point imaging and crystal-clear sound on the high end. The 5.25-inch subwoofer delivers the deep bass that provides that good, necessary rumble for the low end. Audio Alignment Technology for Superb Accuracy and Sound The Expressionist PLUS relies on Altec Lansing's proprietary Audio Alignment™ technology to make certain that all of the speakers' components work together to deliver your music the way it is meant to be heard. Audio Alignment technology ensures the perfect balance of the three elements of the speaker system--the drivers, enclosure, and electronics--to provide a natural, uncolored, and rich sound from your speaker system. Compact, Stylish Design Puts Controls at Your Fingertips The Expressionist PLUS has a stylish, piano-black look that fits any decor, and its smart design details make operation intuitive and easy. The round subwoofer, no bigger than a small Frisbee disk, is intended to sit on the desktop. A fingertip knob on the subwoofer gives you independent control of the bass output and lets you tailor the optimum balance between sub and satellites. Mounted on an adjustable aluminum base, each satellites can be aimed to find that audio sweet spot no matter where you're sitting. Controls for the system’s power and volume are conveniently located on the speakers themselves, making adjustments just an arm's reach away. And with an added AUX IN jack, you can easily connect another source, such as a portable CD, DVD, or MP3 player, and enjoy full-spectrum music. The Altec Lansing FX3021 Expressionist PLUS is backed by a one-year warranty. What's in the Box Expressionist PLUS speaker system, 3.5-mm audio cable, power adapter, and quick connect guide.
Once again - fantastic sound, but still not perfect. As with all the Altec Lansing speakers I've owned, these have fantastic sound. And as with all of them, they didn't QUITE have the design to warrant a perfect score. I also have the BASS-fanatical speakers, Altec Lansing FX3022 Expressionist BASS 2-Way Speaker for PC and MP3 (Black), and while they don't take up as much space as 2 speakers + sub, their versatility is somewhat limited by the amount of bass that you may not always want (and it's not adjustable.) For this 3 piece set, the bass IS adjustable, which makes a profound difference depending on the range of music you listen to. (There's nothing really wrong with the bass-heavy ones...they sound great, but there are times when that much bass isn't wanted.) So, between the two, I'd go with this set. Also, an older set, Altec Lansing VS4121 2.1 Computer Speaker System, 3 piece, I would say sound roughly equivalent to these. But they're kind of an eye-sore. Again, between this set and the older set, these win out. With their great sound, adjustable bass, stylish looks, there are few reasons I wouldn't recommend buying these...but there are a couple reasons. 1. There is no headphone pass-through. I'm not sure if this is an impossible option to add despite sounding so simple, but Altec Lansing sure doesn't think it's an important option. 2. The hard-wired connection between the satellites isn't a delight...but what's more frustrating for me is that the cable between them is REALLY long... but the cable you hook to your audio device/computer connects to the subwoofer...and it's pretty short, which is odd (see #3.) 3. I'm not sure when seeing a subwoofer became stylish (this one certainly looks nice), but most people kind of stuff it away, out of sight, out of mind. You can't do that with this set. The POWER button is on top of the subwoofer (along with bass-control), and if you put the subwoofer under your desk...there's a good chance the included cable won't make it to your computer's audio out jack. 4. The satellites nor the sub are magnetically shielded. The satellites probably don't matter much (most people don't use CRT anymore, and even so, the strength of the magnet is pretty low. The sub may pose a problem if you want to put it by your computer - I would assume it's a good sized magnet that you wouldn't want constantly next to your computer. Despite this, I personally feel speakers should be judged on how well the sound as the major factor...and these sound awesome. Recommended...as close to the perfect computer speakers that you'll find on the market. ============================ UPDATE 8/16/2009: I've been using these speakers for a while now, and I wouldn't change my review of them based on sound quality. However, the power button (not-so-conveniently placed on top of the sub-woofer) doesn't power these up 100% of the time. Sometimes I need to click the button 4-5 times before the light (on the satellite speaker) comes on, denoting they're actually getting power. Not sure if others have had this problem, but it's pretty annoying. What a great sounding system! I love this speaker system because it has great sound overall and great sounding bass that can be adjusted. This system is an improvement over Altec Lansing's FX3022 Expressionist BASS 2-Way Speakers. As I wrote in my Amazon review of the FX3022s, they are for me a close second to Creative Labs' T20 speakers. In that review I rated the T20s 5 for midrange and 4 for bass on a 1-5 scale, and the FX3022s 4 for midrange and 5 for bass. Using the same standards I rate the speaker system under review at this page - the Expressionist PLUS 2.1 system - 5 for midrange and 5 for bass, meaning that to my ears they are slightly superior to the Creative Labs' T20s (which I still consider an excellent pair of speakers for the applications for which they are intended, i.e., use with PCs and MP3 players). The bottom diameter of the cone-shaped subwoofer is approximately 10 1/2 inches, the size of a dinner plate or as some reviewers have noted, a Frisbee. I doubt that too many people have that much free space on their desk, and so the sub can be placed on the floor. There are two potential problems with this that prospective buyers of this system might consider. One is that the on/off knob, which is also the sub volume knob, is atop the sub, and therefore the sub must be in a location where it is readily accessible by the user (without requiring her to go into potentially strain-causing contortions). The other potential problem is if the floor is carpeted. Because the bass speaker fires down, it's not going to sound as good firing down onto a sound-absorbing surface such as a carpet as it will when firing onto, say, a wood or tile floor. (Something else to consider is if your floor, carpeted or not, is someone else's ceiling and they might not want your subwoofer firing down in their direction.) If one does have a carpeted floor and one wishes to place the sub on the floor, one can always place a piece of tile, wood board or some other sound-reflective surface under it. My laptop desk is a standard card table with folding legs, and because it is a bit deeper than most of the desks I've used, I find that there is ample room at the back of it for the sub and the satellites. The satellite to the listener's right has an indicator light on top of it on either side of which are volume control buttons which control the volume level for the entire system. I usually turn it up as far as it will go and then adjust the volume from my computer. These volume control buttons click when pressed, and they require enough pressure that I find I must hold the satellite steady when pressing the buttons. Because of the depth of my desktop (almost 34 inches), I (who am six feet tall) have to stand up to adjust the volume, and I usually have to use two hands, one to hold the speaker and the other to push the volume up button. The volume resets itself to a very low level every time I turn off the power strip that the system is plugged into, and I usually turn that off every night. I may place the sub on the floor at some point - on top of a board or some other sound-reflective surface given that my floor is carpeted. But because my card table/desk is not against a wall, it will not be difficult for me to access the on/off sub volume control knob on the sub, whereas I think it might be difficult if the sub were on the floor beneath a desk that was right up against a wall. (I recently sprained a shoulder from getting into a contorted position beneath my daughter's sink after volunteering - duh - to do some plumbing for her and my son-in-law, and I sure as heck don't want at my age - I'll soon be 58 - to have to crawl under a desk every day in order to operate a knob on top of a sub woofer.) So I suggest that prospective buyers think about where they will place the sub on this unit before making a decision to purchase the unit. By the way, the sub is about 6 1/2 inches high. If you put it under a desk and you don't have room to get it well out of the way of your feet, you'll probably end up bumping into it with your feet a lot, because it is a bulky, though attractive (if you like a high tech look) thing. Like I said, I love this system. I don't have a problem with the logistics of sub placement, and the sound is just great. It is great for the soundtracks of streaming Netflix instant watch movies that I watch on my laptop. It is great for rock music, and great for the music I listen to the most, which is classical and a lot of opera. I'm listening to WNYC classical on the web right now, they are playing a selection by Arvo Part titled "Fratres," and the sound is awesome, truly excellent. It is an added plus that the firing direction of the satellites can be adjusted up and down, and that the satellites are light, relatively small, and unobtrusive. When I first saw them I feared they would produce tinny treble sounds but that is not the case at all, and in fact WNYC is now playing (I took a phone call since "Fratres" began) a John Cage piece called "First Construction (in metal)" performed by the Manhattan Percussion Ensemble, and there are lots of high-pitched percussive sounds in this piece, and the quality with which the satellites reproduce them is excellent, and "warm." I highly recommend this system to anyone who doesn't anticipate a problem with placing the sub in a location that will be convenient and practical for their use. Great, wonderful sound from heavy bass through midrange to treble. In terms of sound quality, Altec Lansing hit a home run with this system. Great Style and Controls, Only Okay Sound Several other reviews rave about the sound quality of this system, but I'd differ and give forewarning that these speakers look stylish and have an interesting set of volume controls (one being on the satellite speaker, then other on top of the independently controlled subwoofer), but the sound is only good, not great. In fact, if I were going for sound quality in an Altec Lansing product, I'd first consider this excellent alternative that cost only $45. If you're buying for cool looks and like direct control of the subwoofer volume, these speakers are a good purchase. If overall sound quality is a higher priority in your 2.1 speakers, however, I'd consider the above recommendation or the Harman Kardon SoundSticks II.

Z-10 Interactive Speaker System
From Logitech

Amazon Sales Rank: #93649 in Consumer Electronics Brand: Logitech

Speakers weren't new I purchased the Logitech Z-10 speakers for my college daughter, as I already own 2 other sets of these speakers. The sound is wonderful, however, I was a bit disappointed that the speakers didn't look new, as stated. The speaker box said 'floor model'. To my surprise, the front of the speakers had some minor scratches. They should of come with a clear plastic wrap on the front of them to protect the plastic on front from getting scratches, but they didn't. The speakers should of included the following, but were missing the instuction booklet, the USB cable to connect them to the computer, the dust cloth and the software. I was able to make a copy of my own instuction booklet for my daughter, I had a spare UCB cable from a calculator, a soft dust cloth, and luckily I was able to download the software from the Logitech website.

Logitech X-120 Compact Powered Speakers
From Logitech

Logitech’s X-120 stereo speakers have the sound and features you expect from Logitech. User friendly controls and improved acoustic design provide an enhanced audio experience. Distinctively designed satellites use a bass port to provide a full, rich sound. The X-120’s controls include power, volume, and combined treble and bass for customizable audio balance.
Brand: Logitech Model: 970083-0403 Platform: Windows XP Original language: English Number of items: 1 Dimensions: 6.30" h x 10.31" w x 10.24" l, 9999.00 pounds
Turn your laptop or desktop computer or your portable audio and video devices into a complete system with Logitech's X-120 compact powered speakers. At roughly 4 x 8 x 5 inches each (W x H x D), the speakers are small enough to take on trips where you'll be holed up in a hotel for any length of time. Their bass-ported enclosures, 2.2-inch drivers, and 2 watts-per-channel power produce surprisingly full-bodied sound, which Logitech rates at an optimistically broad-ranging (but favorably telling) 80 to 18,000 Hz. The set features a unified bass/treble tone control to tailor the sound. Setup and operation couldn't be easier. Plug your ancillary devices into the speakers' stereo minijack audio input, connect the left and right speakers via the supplied audio interconnect, hook up the AC power adapter, and fire up your music or video program. The X-120s have their power supply built into one of the speakers, so you won't have to hunt out an AC outlet with enough clearance for a bulky wall-wart power block. A headphone jack affords private listening--perfect when using the speakers with a component that lacks a headphone jack or, more likely, a headphone volume control. What's in the Box Speakers, a left/right audio interconnect, an AC power adapter, a user's manual, and warranty info.
Good value for the price For $20 the sound from these can't be expected to be room-filling but if you want an attractive and compact 2-piece set for casual music listening and computer "event sounds" you could do worse. Even at high volume there is little distortion. These are unusual in that they don't use a separate power cube; the 120V power cord goes right into one of them, and a fat wire connecting them probably carries both power and signal to the other. None of these cables are detachable. Separate bass and treble controls would have been nice, but the trick here is to make use of the equalizer function built into most modern PC music player programs to boost the higher frequencies. However, bass can become muddy if you try to boost the lower end more than just a little. Good placement and orientation also is critical. In my case I have added a separate subwoofer; with all of the preceding elements I'm hearing sweet music indeed. Audible hum These speakers have a hum that is quite audible and unpleasant, even when the volume is at zero. Another reviewer also had this problem. Either it is a manufacturing defect, or poor design, but a $25 speaker shouldn't suffer from this problem. For this reason, I recommend not purchasing this speaker. Great Value They look good, sound good and are a great value for the price.

Great speakers with computer I recently bought a new computer, mostly for the kids' gaming, and didn't want to spoil the expensive system with the standard crappy speakers. I thought that these were a bit pricey, but decided to buy them anyway. I must say that I am very happy with these. Very solid build, real lookers (I have the white ones), no external amp needed, and the sound quality is so much above my expectations. A normal 5+1 computer speaker set is no match for 2+1 of these, its like comparing VHS and blue-ray. I even prefer their sound over my own stereo system. When no-one else is around, I go to the basement, plug my portable into these and enjoy 'The Best of Van Halen'.

good for the price I recently upgraded from FPS1800, expecting a lot from two way speakers and 7 point. Those speakers do produce high frequency sound, but the mid range somehow got weaker, so it lacks in warmth which FPS1800 had. The bass is pretty good, though it's not as puchy as home audio sytem. Overall, the sound is very powerful (who needs more than 100watts for computer speakers?), and 7 point sourcing in gmaes works very good especially considering its price. For movie, I don't see any difference even when I turn on 7 speakers setting for powerdvd. Little tweak: if you want to get a good music experience, change the front two speakers to bookshelf speakers. Excellent valued speakers ... I just started using these and I will admit they aren't the higest power rated speakers but for a directional 7.1 gaming rig and personal surround system the price is impossible to beat... I bought this with an Audigy 2 Gamer and the best game out there (FarCry) and the price is excellent... The bundle of games with the Audigy 2 Gamer is also a great deal for those that don't have them(...)P>Use the gift certificate for Unreal 2004, Doom 3 or Half Life 2...Keep in mind to get maximum value out of this you need to add a solid video card to your rig. Picked up a Geforce 6800GT OC and am sitting pretty...Happy gaming... Midrange for games and treble + base for music The subwoofer is virtually identical to the 6600 set(6.1) with 2 extra RMS for the 7th speaker layout. The midrange is much like the 6.1's but the front end has tweeters as well as center tweeter/mid for V/O talant in games(which is sadly drown out in most games by sound progammers fault, not the speakers). The games that really thrive are the FPS as everyone says, but some sims also take good advantage even IND War II spreads it out quite well and seems to be universally compatible with all systems-9.1 anyone? Most kinds of games(RPG, Adventure, tactical) do not get fully apprieciated becasue of the subtle sounds that do not get heard well unless you turn up the volumn. insects, birds, distant waterfalls, peasant chatter, and other ambience is better heard on the Gigaworks set or Logitech's 5.1. Which cost two arms and three legs to purchase. On the music side, Classic Rock music(like Rush, Yes, Kansas, Head East, Heart, Spooky Toothe ect.) sound excellent because you don't want too much bass in that stuff. Most other music(classical and easy) nead more midrange and less hissy treble to truely appreciate. If you listen to Beat music or other bass required tunes you need a better set than this. Creative's acompanying sound card does quite well at dividing instruments descretely in all 7 channels however on this set.If you don't have the money for the fancy set, go for it, but if you play games and want to appreciate the sound quality save up for the big one. Otherwise you are probably better off with a 2.1 with tweeters, midrange and a thumpy bass.
