Cerwin-Vega Cvhd-12S Cvhd Series 12-Inch Front-Firing Powered Subwoofer
From Cerwin Vega

The CVHD-12S 12" subwoofer is designed for big bass. The built in amplifier has an impressive 250 watts of power to kick out. If you are after a great sounding woofer, look no further than Cerwin Vega.

CerwinVega quality has dropped since being bought by Stanton Group I bought this sub expecting great things, and overall I was disappointed. The sub does pack a lot of bass, but generally it's boomy, loose bass without real punch or control. The louder you turn it up the louder the boomy, hummy bass becomes, but it never transcends to the kick/thump you want. Also, and this is my biggest gripe with the unit, after a few months of use the amp started to die and now the sub makes a cracking noise any time it's in standby and sometimes even when it's on. It pops, snaps, and generally annoys me so much that I've replaced it with a Klipsch SUB-12 that goes MUCH lower and sounds much more controlled. It also has a lot more power for solid kicks. I think CerwinVega is just a name now, the quality is gone since the company was sold to the Stanton Group, a Chinese consortium that makes the subs at bottom dollar, slaps the CW name on them. Buyer beware. DOA I bought the CVHD speaker package because of great reviews from sites like cnet. I wired my living room and hooked all the speakers up to my new pioneer elite reciever and the autocalibration didn't recognize the sub. Turns out, its because the sub is dead. I took it to a speaker repair shop to connect it to a known source (to rule out my cable or receiver as the cause of the problem) and they verified it was nonfunctional. The sub itself looks great and the other speakers sound good, but I have to say that I might listen to the other reviewers who say that cerwin vega's quality is questionable. I am reviewing the sub here, but I have to add some other things about the cvhd package that I found. Of the brass knobs that screw into the back of the speakers, one was machined to an incorrect diameter so that it wouldnt fit into the bracket they included with the speakers. It was a good thing that I hadn't planned on mounting my center speaker or I would have had to wait for the company to send me another piece. Also, the plastic dry wall anchors were very flimsy, two broke after drilling the screw in place, so two speakers are only held up to the wall with three screws instead of four. Little signs of lack of quality control like those make me regret somewhat that I went with cerwin vega. I am not so sure that this system will last very long, and I would take this into account if you are considering buying from them. Awesome sub for the price I have had this sub for about a year now, and it has made a huge difference to my home theater. It is definitely a house shaker! I have it coupled with a Polk RM20 5 speaker set (the CVHD speakers were too big for me) and a Panasonic XR55 digital receiver. Make sure you check the dimensions though - this thing is huge!
